These are not bold letters. They are separate Unicode characters that happen to look bold. A screen reader announces them as mathematical symbols or skips them entirely, so a headline written this way can be unreadable to someone using one. Search and copy-paste also stop matching them against ordinary letters.
One short phrase is a reasonable trade. A full post, a name, or anything a reader needs in order to follow you is not.
How this actually works
LinkedIn, X, Threads and Facebook publish plain text. There is no bold button because there is no formatting to store. What every tool in this category does instead โ this one included โ is swap your letters for different characters that happen to look bold.
Those characters come from Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which exists so mathematicians can write a bold vector and an italic variable as distinct symbols. A feed renders them because they are ordinary text, not because it understands them as emphasis.
What it costs, stated plainly
None of that makes the tool useless. One short phrase carrying emphasis is a reasonable trade, and it is why the category exists. A whole post, your name, or anything a reader needs in order to act is not โ and no competitor's version of this tool will tell you so.
- A screen reader announces these as mathematical symbols, or skips them. A headline written this way can be silence to someone using one.
- Search does not match them against ordinary letters, so a styled word is invisible to anyone searching for it โ including LinkedIn's own search.
- Copying the text out gives the reader the symbols, not the letters, which breaks quoting and translation.
- Some older Android builds and email clients render unsupported ranges as empty boxes.
