Generated in your browser. This is combining diacritical marks stacked on ordinary letters, not a font. Display names on most apps and some chat clients cap or strip stacked marks, so the paste may come back shorter than it went in. Screen readers either read every mark aloud or go silent on the word, so keep it out of anything a reader has to understand.
What glitch text is made of
Unicode has a block of combining marks: accents, tildes, dots and strokes that attach to whatever letter comes before them. A language uses one at a time. Glitch text uses ten. Each letter you type is followed by a stack of marks, and a browser or app draws all of them, above and below the line, which produces the corrupted look.
There is no font and no image. The output is your text plus a large number of invisible-until-drawn characters, which is why it pastes into any text field and why it behaves badly in most of them. The word “zalgo” comes from a 2004 web comic, and the technique has not changed since.
Why the intensity matters more than the look
Several apps also cap or strip stacked marks in display names specifically, because they were used to overlap other people's messages. If a name comes back plain after saving, that is the app's filter rather than a copy error, and the mini setting is the one most likely to get through.

What it costs, stated plainly
- A screen reader either announces every mark or goes silent for the whole word. A glitched headline is unreadable to someone using one, and a glitched name is unpronounceable.
- Search does not match glitched text to the plain word, including the platform's own search.
- On some devices the stack draws over the lines above and below, so a heavily glitched line can make its neighbours unreadable too.
- Never glitch a handle, a code, a URL, or anything a reader has to retype. It is the plain word plus invisible extras, and the extras break the match.
